need advice for hiking/accomodation N of Maribor

u can hike on Pohorje, pohorje

good hike is from Radvanje to Sumik sumik its about 4 hours in one direction.

To discover beauty of specific land,resting in nature far from civilization and instant hotels, curtural remarkableness, history, different locall food, wonders of nature, different sports in region, guiding and advice of locall home people, I prefer to you, that you visit this side http://www.turisticnekmetije.si/iskanje-kmetij and find there turistic farm in whole Slovenija land, where you want to visit-go and stay.You will have there in Slovenija to see a lot of interest places:mountains, lakes, castles, river Soča,Krka...,termall water sources, autetic specific climatic land places(sea side,alps region,inner continental erias)-caves, grape and vine land, dry pig meat speciality,Prekmurje and Bled cake etc,...Dont forget climb on Triglav or yust Kredarica house, as honour of slovenian people.I wish you unforgetable moments in Slovenija!.

You can also visit Velika Planina (more info in English: http://www.velikaplanina.si/Home). It's around 1,5 hour driving from Maribor, but it's worth.

You can also cross the Pohorje (in 2 days) from Maribor to Slovenj Gradec and then by bus (or train from Dravograd) back in Maribor. On that way you can see Sumik fall (Slap Šumik), Lovrenska lakes (Lovrenška jezera) and few ski centers.

If you are hiker, go to Kredarica house, definitly. Itˇs not so hard go hike there. You can also wisit seven lakes in Triglav national park. From there you can see many diferent mountains, from Špik to Triglav.Also, go to Velika planina. It is very nice place to go. Pokljuka is known by itˇs sport center and is traditional starting point to hike on Triglav.
